Tonight the season 2 finale of Ghost Brothers is set to air on Destination America at 10PM ET. The series consisting of Juwan Mass, Marcus Harvey, and Dalen Spratt has opened up new doors in the paranormal world. The show went on to provide necessary laughs and an honest experience with ghosts from the perspective of three black men. So with the huge success of Jordan Peele’s Get Out you can’t help but see the new horizon in the horror industry. Well we caught up with Marcus, Juwan, and Dalen to of course talk comedy as well as taking Ghost Borthers to theaters.
CH: WITH YOU GUYS DOING THESE INVESTIGATIONS ON PEOPLE WHO HAVE PASSED ON, IS THERE A NON-LIVING COMEDIAN WHO YOU GUYS WOULD LIKE TO LOOK INTO IT?
MARCUS: You know what, I think it would be cool to go to that hotel where John Belushi died. I think that was a very mysterious type of situation. Everyone would like to talk with Redd Foxx. “What are you doing you Big Dummy?” [Laughs] Might want to even talk with George Carlin and see if he still believes there is no heaven.
JUWAN: We have to have like a Motley Crue of comedians. From the very recent Charlie Murphy, Robin Harris, to Richard Pryor. Think it would be dope to go on an investigation with all of those guys.
CH: MARCUS WE SAW YOU ON SOCIAL MEDIA WEARING YOUR ROYAL TEE SHIRT; WHAT’S YOUR THOUGHTS ON A COMING TO AMERICA 2?
MARCUS: I would say this. If I’m in it, I’m for it. If I’m not, I’m still for it because it’s comedy and it’s a great thing. Of course you can’t top one of the most legendary comedies of all time. As long as I’m in part 2 then I’m cool with it. [Laughs] I still believe Friday is the greatest comedy of all-time before Coming To America.
CH: COULD WE EVER EXPECT A GHOST BROTHERS MOVIE?
JUWAN: From your lips to God’s ears. I wouldn’t dare put a limit to what can happen. I think it would be a hit. Lord knows what would happen if you put a script behind it. I think a movie with us would be a huge huge hit. Also since they shown diversity with the Ghostbuster, you can see that lane for us in paranormal films.
MARCUS: Yes, the concept is dope because it’s super real. Just because we go in those spots and we seem scared you still have to have a level of courage to go in there. It gives you everything that any dope movie would have. It gives you humor, it gives you fear, it gives action. Juwan is always running so it gives you action. And I’m always eating so it gives you more action. [Laughs] Of course our pens are lethal. Me, Juwan, and Dalen are always writing different things. I think it’s cool because we are still are kind of an underground movement going down.
DALEN: Yes! It’s definitely a conversation that needs to be had
CH: WE CAN’T HELP BUT NOTICE THE COMEDIC UNDERLINE THAT THE SHOW HAS SINCE THE FIRST SEASON. MARCUS WITH YOU BEING A COMEDIAN, WHAT OTHER COMEDIC TALENTS DO YOU THINK WOULD BE FUN TO HAVE ON THE SHOW?
MARCUS: I think that fellas actually have a natural comedic element but anyone I can see that would be a dope comedic personality …. there’s a lot of dope comedians in Atlanta period….. (Tyler Chronicles, Hank Denson, Ronnie Jordan) But celebrities it would be Roy Woods Jr. and Lil Rel. I like they both have gospel and southern backgrounds with their humor. Roy Woods Jr.’s special on Comedy Central was amazing. I love all his stuff and I always been a big fan of Lil Rel.
CH: SPEAKING OF LIL REL, HE BROUGHT IN SOME NECESSARY COMEDY BREAKS IN THE FILM GET OUT. HOW IMPORTANT DO YOU THINK THOSE COMEDIC BREAKS ARE FOR YOUR SERIES?
MARCUS: It’s very important. With what we do it is kind of like a Sour Patch Kids… our style on bringing comedy to it I think it opens up to a lot more dope activities. With Ghost Brothers there’s a super healthy balance between comedy and the paranormal world.. I don’t think we push our comedy. We don’t try to set up ourselves with jokes, it just happened naturally. That’s what you’re seeing now with the horror industry like you mentioned; that you have to have that laugh. In real life, right before you have your scariest moments you have that nervous laugh. We just install that for the audience.
CH: WAS THERE A FUNNY MOMENT DURING FILMING THAT WE DIDN’T SEE?
JUWAN: It was when Dalen was dressed in stripes like a peppermint. It was late one night and Dalen didn’t want to get out with Marcus and I. We went to dinner and on the way out we saw bowl of peppermint and put it at Dalen’s door. So when he woke up that morning he got a taste of the freshness. It had to be 100 peppermints. It was a running joke through out the set.
DALEN: I think my funniest moment was when Juwan and I accidentally got a couples massage. They told us it was a cheaper. [Laughs] They ended up taking us to this Gazebo in the ocean. While we were on the Gazebo we saw the crew and Marcus from the shore looking in awe. [Laughs]
CH: JUWAN AND DALEN BOTH HAVE A FASHION BACKGROUND, WHAT’S YOUR TAKE ON COMEDIANS IN SUTIS VS. COMEDIANS DRESSING LAID BACK?
JUWAN: To be honest I think it is about versatility in style and what ever you are comfortable in. I really think you can wear a suit for any occasion. If Dave Chappelle wants to get in a suit and is comfortable than by all means do it If that’s not someone’s style I don’t fault them for that. I think one thing with comedy you have to be extremely comfortable … It comes down to your personal style.
DALEN: I heard one of the greats, I think it was Steve Harvey say “When you’re coming out to put on a show, you always dress better than the audience. They’re coming to see you.” I think it was always cool to see a comedian dress up because it comes off that they have more control.
MARCUS: I feel like it comes down to whatever your material will be that night. If you put on a suit your coming off authoritative or I’m grown. Like when Cedric The Entertainer dresses up he’s coming from a grown man and high end standards. DL the same way they are leaders of the crew. Even like Kevin Hart he wants to have that look of “I Am A Rockstar.” It’s about how you want come off.
The men went on to also express that humor and comedy actually goes hand in hand because they both bring out emotions you can’t control. The finale of Ghost Brothers season 2 is set to air tonight at 10PM on Destination America.
