Interview By Lafonia Lawrence & Eric Lawrence

Larenz Tate has built an astounding acting career and resume. With classics such as Menace II Society, The Inkwell, Dead Presidents, Love Jones, Why Do Fools Fall in Love, and the multi-award winning “Crash”; it was an honor interviewing such a passionate artist. In his new series Game Of Silence which has now premiered on NBC, Larenz plays Shawn Cook, one of the guys in the crew that looks to hold everyone together apart of a revenge scheme. The show reflects on childhood friends who experienced a horrible tragedy that resulted in being sent to a juvenile detention center. Fast forward to 25 years later with several horrific hardships during those detention center times behind them they form a new bond on a path of revenge! Now, its their time to right a few wrongs!  Though Game Of Silence doesn’t focus on much laughter, Larenz still knows a thing or two about comedy. In our new segment Where’s The Comedy? we caught up with the respected actor whose appeared on The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air & Family Matters; to give us a rundown on his favorite comedians, humor on his show, and how he feels about today’s sitcoms.

WHERE’S THE COMEDY?

CH: Outside Of Your Longtime Friend Bill Bellamy, Who Are Some Of Your Top Favorite Comedians?

LT: I like a lot of guys, I love Dave Chappelle, obviously Chris Rock, Kevin Hart. There’s a lot talented guys coming up right now. Comedy is an amazing thing. You got guys like Ali Saadiq, D’Lai, J. Reid; they got that Ladies Night Our Tour with Bill Bellamy. I actually helped them produce a little documentary of that hour special for Showtime. I’m always looking to see what new comics are out there.

CH: Now This Is A Pretty Serious Series But Did You Have Any Comedic Moments Or Funny Outtakes?

LT: I’m glad you asked that because my character Shawn Cook is a little more light hearted. He defnitely has some light humor but I wouldn’t say he is a comedian. He’s the guy that kind of breaks the ice with our show.

CH: We Know You’ve Done Classic Sitcoms. What Would Be Your Opinion On Some Of The Sitcoms You See Today?

LT: There’s not a whole lot of sitcoms out right now. I think they need to have more. Back in the day we had like sitcom heaven. With the influx of reality shows, everybody is kind of getting away from scripted but we got to get back to it. Do your thing with the reality but we got to get back to the talented writers and talented artist.

CH: So How About A Show Like Black-Ish?

LT: I’ve seen Black-ish. Anthony Anderson is friend. Lawrence Fishburn is a friend. I like their narrative but we need more of those kinds of shows. It doesn’t have to be exactly like Black-ish but they need to have some balance.

CH: So Where’s The Comedy?” In Game Of Silence?

LT: Well as far as being on set I tell people the funniest thing about that is the directors would come to our show. We have different directors each episode. Because it’s a primetime show you don’t curse but when we’re rehearsing we are cussing up a storm [Laughs]. Then they stop us and ask “Ok can we do the TV version?”. It’s kind of funny to see how they react, signs of O Dog would start showing up. [Laughs]

We have often found humor, even in many of his serious roles, because of his sincerity in character and his comedic timing. Congratulations to NBC, Larenz Tate, and the entire cast of Game of Silence airing Thursdays at 10/9C on NBC.
